We are pleased to announce the theme of the 6th Implementation Science Research Conference 2023:

Sustaining health and public services in an uncertain future: what role for implementation science?

Now in its sixth year, the 2023 conference will bring together scientists, researchers, policymakers, clinicians, practitioners, service users and the public from around the world.

Together, we will discuss how implementation science can help to sustain and develop health and public services, against a background of social, geopolitical, technological and environmental change.

We are especially interested in research relating to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, including health and wellbeing, education, climate change and reducing inequalities.

We want to explore ways to implement evidence-based research into policy and practice, helping to develop resilient systems, and to bring about sustainable change to improve health and public services.

We welcome colleagues interested in the role of implementation science in fields including environmental research, education, climate change, policy, and health and social care.

The conference programme 

The hybrid interdisciplinary conference will feature plenary lectures from leading international researchers. It will also include oral and poster presentations organised under specialist themes, roundtable discussions, question and answer sessions, and networking.

Leading experts as plenary speakers

We will be inviting leading international implementation science and public policy experts as plenary speakers. We are pleased to confirm that our first two plenary speakers will be: 

David Pencheon is a UK trained doctor and the founder Director of the Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) for NHS England and Public Health England, established in 2007. He left the SDU in 2018 and is now an Honorary Professor and an Associate at the Medical and Health School at the University of Exeter, UK, an Advisory Group member and associate with the Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health, a collaborator with the European Centre for Environment and Health and the Global Systems Institute, all at Exeter. The aim of his research is to understand the role of health professionals and health systems in ensuring a safe, equitable and prosperous planet for all.

In his plenary, David will discuss: The role of health systems, heath organisations and health professionals in creating fair, sustainable, and healthy futures. 

Enola Proctor, professor of social work research, Washington University, USA. Enola’s research is motivated by the question, how do we ensure that people receive the very best possible care? She has studied this question in a variety of social work, public health, and health care settings, ranging from hospitals to community agencies. 

In her plenary lecture, Enola will reflect on ten years of implementation outcomes research.

Professor Malabika Sarker

Malabika Sarker, professor of the practice of behavioural and social science at Brown School of Public Health, Brown University, USA. She is a  public health doctor, mixed-method specialist and implementation researcher.  Prof Sarker founded the Center of Excellence of Science of Implementation & Scale-Up (SISU) at BRAC School of Public Health, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Her recent efforts have been concentrated on sustaining community health interventions in the global south and diversifying implementation science.

In her plenary lecture, Malabika will address: Sustaining community health interventions in the global south and diversifying implementation science.

Dr Shaun Danquah

Dr Shaun Danquah, founder and director of innovation at Centric Community Research. Centric believes that those who have lived the challenges of underserved communities know better about them. The organisation has built a platform for the ‘hard to reach' to gain access to research to tell their realities, experiences, truth and lessons. Centric provides healing for the deepest, darkest pain and a strong sense of empathy towards those going through issues and about to embark on perilous journeys. Their work is not about appeasement; it’s about being real about the desire to improve the situation through access in the academic world.

In their joint plenary Shaun and Muhammed (below), will explore: The Urban Ecology – Research into Action.

Muhammed Rauf

Muhammed Rauf is the director of business development at Centric Community Research, with a passion for driving growth and expanding into new thematic areas. He has six years of experience in business development and a proven track record of building strong and sustainable relationships. He has been instrumental in creating partnerships and collaborations that empower communities to take charge of identifying and addressing their own challenges. He has an understanding of the importance of building strong relationships, establishing trust, and fostering inclusivity to promote positive social change.

The conference is part of a week of events organised by NIHR ARC South London dedicated to implementation science, the study and practice of implementing research findings effectively into health, social care and public services. For the first time, we will be holding the UK implementation science research conference as a hybrid event, with the opportunity to participate both in person and online.

We are very pleased to be working with our partners at the Health Implementation Science and Technology Cluster (HIST) at the University of Limerick, Ireland, (University building pictured below) who will be hosting the event.

Travel to Limerick and accommodation 

The University of Limerick is situated on an attractive riverside campus, around 5km from Limerick City and 20km from Shannon International Airport.

Delegates attending in person will need to arrange their own travel to the University and book their own accommodation.

There is a limited amount of accommodation available on campus. There is also a wide range of accommodation available in Limerick City.

There was a good mix of formats, with oral presentations and posters presentations. The plenary talks were excellent. While I don't like singling any out, Jill Francis's plenary was really insightful and informative, with something for everyone working in this field. And Vanessa Carter's plenary was so engaging and thought provoking. Meet the expert sessions are a good opportunity to just 'come along' and ask questions, or just hear the discussions
