ARC South London is offering six NIHR-funded awards to help health and social care professionals in Greater London to prepare to apply to the NIHR doctoral award schemes.
The six awards aim to build health and social care research skills, support the use of research in practice and promote diversity in research.

Who can apply?
You must be at a pre-doctoral stage and a professional from one of our target groups. These funds are to support you to prepare a competitive NIHR doctoral application. You need to be eligible to apply for your chosen Doctoral NIHR career development award.
Who are our target groups?
Eligible applicants for the awards must be:
- regulated health and care professionals (nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, pharmacists and healthcare scientists)
- social work or public health professionals
This funding enables the NIHR to make a positive impact on groups and professions identified as underrepresented within NIHR.
We particularly encourage applications from those who self-identify as belonging to an under-represented group(s) (e.g. LGBTQ+, ethnic group, living with a disability, carer).
What is involved?
- Applicants’ employers must agree to them taking time out from their current role to work on their NIHR doctoral application, as well as take up opportunities to undertake funded patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) activity (£2,000), receive mentorship, and visit Centres of Research Excellence or participate in conferences (£1000). A £12,000 payment will be made to awardees’ employers to cover time release.
- Additional funds of £5,000 per awardee are available to cover training course fees.
Funding duration
NIHR ARC South London has been awarded this funding by the NIHR, to build research capacity. The funding will run from 1 February 2025 to 31 March 2026.
