Improving access to care: ensuring health and social care gets to people who need it most

In this seminar, we will show how NIHR ARC South London is using applied health and social care research - which involves people requiring services, their families and carers - to improve care among people who need it most. The seminar will highlight examples of research designed to improve care for children and young people and older people with advanced illness.

Presentations

The seminar will be chaired by  Ruth Hutt, Director of Public Health at Lambeth Council. After an introduction from Ruth Hutt will outline the health and care challenges and priorities in Lambeth, there will be two presentations from the ARC's children and young people's research and palliative and end of life care research themes. Presentations will include:

Implementing a new model of care for children and young people in Lambeth and Southwark

Dr Ingrid Wolfe, director of the Children and Young People’s Health Partnership (CYPHP) and Dr Lucy Pickard, consultant paediatrician, King’s College Hospital will discuss how ARC researchers have helped to implement and evaluate a new programme that is improving the way health care is delivered for the 128,000 children and young people living in Southwark and Lambeth.

Improving palliative care for older people in the community to enhance quality of life

Dr Anna Bone, lecturer in epidemiology and palliative care, and Professor Catherine Evans, professor of palliative care, both King’s College London, will discuss how  ARC researchers have developed new models of integrated community-based care to improve quality of life for care home residents with advanced illness.

After the presentations, there will be a Q&A session. There will then be an opportunity to discuss in small groups some of the questions and issues highlighted.
