What role do emotions play in public involvement? In this webinar we will be exploring topics such as epistemic injustice, managing emotional contributions to meetings, and considering what it means to do patient and public involvement in ‘sensitive’ areas of research.

We hope to encourage interactive discussions to consider the challenges of doing research on emotive topics, as well as generating ideas on possible ways forward.

Presenters

Lauren Asare, Naomi Morley and Julia Burton of the NIHR ARC South West Peninsula Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) team will discuss their research and conceptual review on this topic: Emotion in public involvement: A conceptual review

The webinar will be chaired by Stan Papoulias, PPI research theme lead at NIHR ARC South London and facilitated by Elspeth Mathie theme lead of Inclusive Involvement in Research at NIHR ARC East of England.

About the presenters

Lauren Asare is a research assistant working in the PenARC Patient and Public Involvement (PPIE) team. She supports patients and members of the public in their involvement and engagement during the ongoing process of conducting research into healthcare services.

Julia Burton joined PenARC as a public contributor in 2021, after a career as a teacher. She has also been a dedicated volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Society for 15 years, including as a lead volunteer at a Memory Café and has shaped dementia research with her lived experience. Julia was part of the IDEAL programme, the largest study of living well with dementia in Great Britain. The evidence of this programme enabled the development of new policy, interventions and initiatives to transform the lives of people with dementia and their carers (eg Living Well with Dementia Toolkit).

Naomi Morley is a research associate in the PenARC PPIE team, supporting the coordination of effective involvement and engagement of patients and public members in the Children’s Health & Maternity, and Ageing, Dementia and Frailty, priority programmes. Naomi's background is in dementia care and stroke rehabilitation.
