The Dementia Journeys exhibition was created in response to Empowering Better End-of-Life Dementia Care (EMBED-Care) – a research programme that aims to generate a step-change in how care is provided for people at any age with any type of dementia.

The exhibition brought to life the powerful, often unseen stories of unpaid carers supporting loved ones with dementia at the end of their lives. These personal accounts shine a light on both the challenges carers face, emotionally and within the system, and the deep love and commitment they show every day. Visitors were invited to share their own thoughts and experiences, creating a moving collection of reflections.

In 2025, creative studio The Liminal Space was commissioned to create a website and accompanying magazine, illustrated by cartoonist Dr Ian Williams, about this important work.

The website gives people the chance to explore the artworks exhibited and hear from those who visited. It includes a powerful short film based on a poem by Louise Wallwein MBE, brought to life by carer and storyteller Claire Dunn. Alongside the creative content, the site offers insights into research and policy around end-of-life care, and encourages visitors to take action by writing to their MP and pushing for change.

The companion magazine asks a vital question: "How can we empower better end-of-life dementia care?" Through stories, artworks and first-hand experiences, it explores what it means to care for someone with dementia – and celebrates those who do. It also invites readers to think about their own role in this story: "How would you want to be cared for? And will you lend your voice to demand better end-of-life dementia care?"
