The course was open to all MHIN researchers actively engaged in programme activities and attracted 16 participants, including researchers, Public Patient and Involvement (PPI) colleagues and practitioners from across the three MHIN projects and wider networks. Attendees travelled from across the country, representing locations such as Preston, Stockport, Derby, Hull Ipswich, and Newcastle.
This highly regarded course was a unique opportunity to learn from two of the most influential and internationally renowned psychiatrists Prof Sir Graham Thornicroft and Prof Norman Sartorius. In addition to enhancing professional and leadership abilities, the course fosters ongoing collaborative relationships among participants, leading to the development and implementation of joint projects and publications.
The course format was interactive and intensive and aimed to enhance participants’ leadership and professional skills, emphasising the acquisition of specific competencies essential for mental health researchers. The course covered key practical skills necessary for career advancement and effective leadership, including:
- Writing a curriculum vitae and letter of motivation
- Communication and negotiation skills
- Chairing meetings and serving on committees
- Selecting research topics and presenting funding proposals
- How to write and read a scientific paper
- Preparation for fellowship interviews.
